Gourmet cream puffs

December 3rd, 2006 by Ping

Cream puffs

I bought this wonderful looking cream puffs today. The store labelled it as gourmet cream puffs. Instead of having the usual custard filling, these are filled with a LOT of sweet whipped cream. After going through about a third of the creamy filling, I started getting the “jelak” feeling. Too much of a “good” thing. But I still think they look so very tempting.

Bak kut teh

bak kut teh

Mei came over for dinner this evening. When I asked her what she would like to eat, she said, “Bak kut teh,” so that’s what I made. I also microwave-steamed some frozen brussel sprouts with garlic oil and oyster sauce. Both of us had a good time polishing off the whole pot of bak kut teh. Then we each had 2 servings of Diet Pepsi Chocolate cake with cool whip topping, while watching a dvd.

Today I decided to go back to the 13-week walk/run program and followed week 9-session 1 schedule, which is run 10 minutes, walk 1 minute, run 20 minutes, walk 1 minute, run 15 minutes, walk 1 minute, run 10 minutes….58 minutes altogether. Temperature 13C.

Happy Birthday, Tai-Lo!

diet soda cake

I made this diet soda “birthday” cake from a can of Diet Pepsi Vanilla, a box of dark chocolate fudge dry cake mix, and nothing else. No eggs, no butter, no oil. It’s slightly crumbly but still quite moist. Unfortunately, the blue cake decorating gel (leftover from last year’s birthday cheesecake decorating project) would not show on the dark cake, so I couldn’t write anything on it. And I left Darth Tater in my office to guard over my desk, so he couldn’t make it for this year’s photo.

I’m watching the Corpse Bride on TV right now and the main character’s name is, of all names, Victor :)

Peanut butter pie

Peanut butter pie

I made this peanut butter pie last night. I found the recipe from a vegetarian cooking site. Here’s the recipe:

16 oz. soft tofu
1 cup creamy peanut butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 Tbsp. soy milk
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips
1 unbleached, 9-inch chocolate crust, chilled
Combine all the filling ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips. Spoon into the pie shell.
Refrigerate at least 2 hours and serve with vegan whipped cream and non-dairy ice cream.

It actually tastes pretty good but doesn’t look as good.

A well-deserved lunch of char koay teow

Penang Char Koay Teow

The Penang Restaurant is located a block away from Central Park and that’s where I went for lunch. Have you ever had a US$11.25 plate of char koay teow? In the real Penang island, this char koay teow would be considered average. I miss char koay teow with cockles.

Papaya

Papaya

I haven’t had papaya in a long time. The last time I had some was probably when I was back in Malaysia last December. So instead of getting some bakery desserts at the grocery store, I bought a papaya instead…3.87 lbs (1.75kg) at the price of $5.38. Expensive for a fruit but this papaya came all the way from Belize. I’ll probably get so sick of it by the time I finish the 3 containers of cut papaya.

Oatmeal raisin cookies

Oatmeal raisin cookies

Just a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies that I baked just now. I used half the the amount of sugar in the recipe and the cookies are not sweet enough. I’ll try the recipe again another day.

Funnel cake

musikfest funnel cake

When I mentioned to my friends that I’m planning to go to Musikfest, several of them mentioned funnel cake. And I’ve never even heard of funnel cake, apparently it’s one of THE carnival/festival food in the US. So I had to get a funnel cake.

What does it taste like? It’s sort of like a Malaysia/Chinese “harm-cheen-paeng”, but the funnel cake is slightly crunchier, not as salty, and it is coated with powdered sugar.
Do I like it? Hmmm…it’s ok but not memorable and not something that I would crave. By the time I ate about a third of it, it started to feel greasy. I only ate slightly less than half of it.

I also had a hot and spicy fresh Kielbasa (polish sausage) in a bun with onion and green peppers for dinner. My pastor is a Polish-American and he mentioned kielbasa several times during his sermons. So it was another food that I thought I should try.

Musikfest food system is like a food fair in schools/church in Malaysia. One has to buy coupons/tickets before exchanging those for food or beverage. Each ticket is 50 cents. The kielbasa= 12 tickets, funnel cake= 8 tickets, and lemonade= 7 tickets. Not cheap. So I’m planning to sneak in some food during the Heart concert that I’ll be attending next Sunday.

Carrot cake

carrot cake
This is my first ever carrot cake. I baked this using this Carrot Cake recipe from Allrecipes.com. It turned out really good, even my totally health conscious roommate liked it. My next endeavor would be blueberry muffins and then after that a banana cake.

Today while I was at the library, I overheard a girl telling her friend about a cake recipe using boxed cake mix and one can of diet soda, that’s it. I checked online and some people recommend using 2-3 egg whites so that the cake is fluffier and not so crumbly. I am totally intriqued by this. I’m going to the grocery store tomorrow to get the 2 ingredients for this cake.
