Almost reached the goal…

November 12th, 2006 by ailsa

Yes, I recoded all 39 articles.
Yes, I reviewed previous codes and made changes.
Yes, I calculated every single effect size. But due to some changes I will have to review them again :(
Yes, I made many decisions but the decision-making process is not complete. Some items are too complex and I’ll have to run those by my advisor first before making any decision.
No, I did not enter all data into SPSS. Since I do not have SPSS at home, I’ll only be able to do it in my office tomorrow.

How come I’m updating if I did not meet the premack goal that I set for myself?
Because it has been a crazy week of work, work, and more work. I need a blogging break (excuses, excuses, excuses) :P

Frustration with ambiguity

November 6th, 2006 by ailsa

“Ambiguity is part of life and we will have to learn to live with it and/or be continually frustrated by it.”
~ Someone in my Learning Environments class (2006)

I’m currently working on recoding all the articles in my meta-analysis. I thought I had a good handle on all the items and their definitions. But after training 3 of my fellow coursemate to code a third of all the articles, I find that there’s so much ambiguity. It’s frustrating! For every question that they have for me regarding the codes, for each time some form of clarification is required: it’s another decision that I have to make. And I can’t just make any random decision, it has to be a rational, informed, “helpful in answering my research questions” decision, and I have to be prepared to defend those decisions. What makes this harder is the fact that there cannot be any ambiguity: It has to be a yes or a no, and not a maybe.

Anyway, Premack principle has been enforced once again. It’s ridiculous, I know.

This time, I am only allowed to update this blog after I have recoded all 39 articles in my database (review previous codes and make changes, if necessary; calculate every single effect size; make decisions for every item that needs some form of decision making) and enter all data into SPSS.

BN Music sampler

Music sampler

The music section of Barnes and Noble had several of these music samplers. I’m not sure if they’re available in Malaysia now, but unlike the music testers in Carrefour, with these the selection is almost limitless. You can search by artists or bestsellers, and I think even sample music videos.

Saucon Promenade

Saucon Promenade

A new shopping mall just opened near Duh. About 10-minute drive from here. Lots of higher end shops, looks very classy, most importantly it’s so near. On the other hand, I don’t think I’ll buy much from here because the prices are going to be over my budget. But it’s nice to have somewhere to go to for the sake of going somewhere.

Good job! Now you can have your candy…

Submitted my revision to my advisor this afternoon. Now that I can have my reinforcer, there’s nothing interesting to write about.
