Philadelphia Eagles training camp

Eagles in training

Every summer, the Philadelphia Eagles (NFL football team) comes to Lehigh for their training camp. On the last day of training camp, I took the trouble to go watch them in action. There were lots of fans and football players. The football field is right next to the running track where I run/walk.

Old news

August 13th, 2006 by ailsa

Now that I know how to embed youtube videos to my blog I’ve got one old video that I would like to share. The Heart concert is the second open air concert that I’ve seen in the US. My first was the Live-8 concert in Philadelphia. That was in July 2005. And that day-long concert was great since it was part of several concerts that were held around the world to support the ONE organization that was trying to convince the G8 leaders to eradicate poverty especially among some African nations. And it was free!

Since that concert was a year ago, I don’t remember the list of who was there. But this video was taken when Bon Jovi sang Livin on a Prayer.

If you follow the video closely you’ll see a blond guy in a white and blue stripe shirt. I remember this guy…he was drunk (although Live-8 was supposed to be alcohol-free) and I think the water bottle that he was holding was not filled with H2O. He almost got into a fight with another guy. After the scuffle, I slowly moved away from this group. I also couldn’t help it but get myself in the video…I needed proof that I was at Live-8, just in case years down the road this event becomes some kind of milestone, which I doubt it will. I still wonder if the ONE message got across to this “Livin on a Prayer” crowd.

I thought the other video is slightly better but this one really does capture the Musikfest atmosphere.

Musikfest finale

I’ve finally done Musikfest. Paid to see a concert. Brought along lawn chair for lawn ticket. Saw several free shows. Had funnel cake. Used the port-a-potty. Saw the fireworks. Walked across Fahy bridge in the smoky fireworks aftermath.

Komen NYC Race for the Cure

August 11th, 2006 by ailsa

I’ve finally registered to participate in the Komen New York City Race for the Cure on September 10, 2006 in Central Park. I have my own page where people can go to and support me by making their donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

But I still can’t run 5K continuously yet. The past 3 weeks has been really tough…heat waves, thunderstorms in the evenings, and the particularly tough “week 6″ of the 13-week run/walk program. Week 6 starts of with “run 5 minutes, walk 1 minute and repeat 8 times”, I tried that once but I could only manage to do 3 repetitions. And I’ve slacked off ever since that day.

I’m not really going to push myself to run continuously during the Race. I’ll just do what I can manage, hopefully I’ll continue to train during the coming 4 weeks.

Don’t forget to support me in the Race! :)

Papaya

Papaya

I haven’t had papaya in a long time. The last time I had some was probably when I was back in Malaysia last December. So instead of getting some bakery desserts at the grocery store, I bought a papaya instead…3.87 lbs (1.75kg) at the price of $5.38. Expensive for a fruit but this papaya came all the way from Belize. I’ll probably get so sick of it by the time I finish the 3 containers of cut papaya.

Oatmeal raisin cookies

Oatmeal raisin cookies

Just a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies that I baked just now. I used half the the amount of sugar in the recipe and the cookies are not sweet enough. I’ll try the recipe again another day.

Funnel cake

musikfest funnel cake

When I mentioned to my friends that I’m planning to go to Musikfest, several of them mentioned funnel cake. And I’ve never even heard of funnel cake, apparently it’s one of THE carnival/festival food in the US. So I had to get a funnel cake.

What does it taste like? It’s sort of like a Malaysia/Chinese “harm-cheen-paeng”, but the funnel cake is slightly crunchier, not as salty, and it is coated with powdered sugar.
Do I like it? Hmmm…it’s ok but not memorable and not something that I would crave. By the time I ate about a third of it, it started to feel greasy. I only ate slightly less than half of it.

I also had a hot and spicy fresh Kielbasa (polish sausage) in a bun with onion and green peppers for dinner. My pastor is a Polish-American and he mentioned kielbasa several times during his sermons. So it was another food that I thought I should try.

Musikfest food system is like a food fair in schools/church in Malaysia. One has to buy coupons/tickets before exchanging those for food or beverage. Each ticket is 50 cents. The kielbasa= 12 tickets, funnel cake= 8 tickets, and lemonade= 7 tickets. Not cheap. So I’m planning to sneak in some food during the Heart concert that I’ll be attending next Sunday.

Musikfest food

musikfest food

I’ve been in Bethlehem for close to three years and I’ve never attended the Musikfest till now. Musikfest is a 10-day music festival held in Bethlehem every August. Today I made a special trip to check out the festival and see what it is all about.

There’s lots of music and a lot more food. And I figured for a lot of people it’s all about hanging out with friends and family, and not really about the music, since they were chatting away during the performance.
